Warwick Castle was built by William the Conqueror after his victory over King Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Its first incarnation was a wooden motte and bailey. William entrusted the castle’s construction to Henry de Newburgh, who became the first Earl of Warwick in 1088. Under the de Newburgh family, the wooden castle began to be rebuilt in stone. At the same time, Warwick developed into a thriving market town. For information about visiting the castle, head to: warwick-castle.com.
