Named after the area it is in. George William Grant McConachie (1909-1965) was a barnstormer and bush pilot in Canada's north. He was born in Ontario and earned his pilot's licence in 1929. McConachie went on to found a number of airlines and throughout his career worked to improve Canada's international air services. He earned the McKee Trophy in 1945 and was named to Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame in 1973. Neighbourhoods in the Pilot Sound area are named in honour of Canadian pilots.
