This section of the wall is the remaining remnant of Erfurt's outer defensive ring, which was demolished in 1875.
The Johannesmauer (St. John's Wall) was originally built as a ring around the city of Erfurt in the first third of the 11th century. This section of the wall is therefore approximately 1,000 years old!
The park on the Johannesmauer is a relic of the former ramparts with a section of the inner city wall from 1168. Until the 19th century was before this wall of the Johannesfriedhof.
