"Combining the useful with the beautiful" was the motto of Prince Franz of Anhalt-Dessau, which also included flood protection on the Elbe and Mulde rivers. Thus, from 1770 to 1800, numerous watchtowers were built along the dikes of the Garden Kingdom. These functional buildings were integrated into the beautification of the region through very different external forms. Among them is the so-called "Limesturm" (Limes Tower), in the style of a Roman watchtower. It is marked as the "Hohe(s) Wachhaus" (High Guard House) on the map of the Ducal Offices of Anhalt-Dessau from 1817 and 1818.

The term "Limesturm" was coined by the cultural historian Prof. Dr. Erhard Hirsch. In his work "Dessau-Wörlitz, Enlightenment and Early Classicism," he describes: "The combination of instruction and practice is evident everywhere, from the replica of Hadrian's Walls in northern England in the Luisium period to the archaeological reconstruction of a Roman Limes with a watchtower and a rampart passage, where the Elbe dam shields the Italo-Roman cultural landscape from the 'barbarian tribes' from the north." (Hirsch 1987, p. 217) The named 'barbarian tribes' are an interesting metaphor for the protection of the dike from driftwood and ice during a flood.
