After 1237 the Franciscans settled on the edge of the old town. Around 1250-70 they built an elongated, flat-roofed hall church made of brick with slim window slits, which has been preserved in both nave walls.
Founded on morass, the church lost its vaults early on. Restored as the church of the Refugiés in 1787 and 1850, the west wall was destroyed by a bomb in 1945. The roof and vault collapsed in 1986. Emergency security secured in 1992 and the ruins were stabilized in 2007/08.

The Franciscans moved to the old town of Brandenburg in 1237 and began around the middle of the 13th century. with the construction of their monastery. After the Reformation, the monastery became municipal property and was used as a hospital and later partly as a brewery.
As part of the renovation of St. John's Church for the BUGA 2015, the northern choir niche was opened and the late medieval access to the sacristy was restored. Medieval wall paintings were discovered
