You could write a book about the history of the Allegheny River and still not cover everything. Since time immemorial the river has been an important source of food, water, and trade for the Haudenosaunee (previously known as Iroquois) and their ancestors. It also played an important part in the French and Indian War as well as the Revolutionary War. The legacy lives on today as many songwriters such as Buster Red, Pete Seeger, and Old Crow Medicine show have penned songs about the famous stretch of water.
