The Jagiellonian Late Gothic building is adorned with a Baroque altar by Matěj Krupka and a crypt containing the mummified remains of citizens of Jaroměř. Adjacent to the church is the bell tower with a gate, through which the so-called Polish Way led in the Middle Ages.

The cathedral burned down several times over the centuries. A fire in 1548 destroyed the southern tower, which stood on the site of the current labor office building. The northern so-called watchtower, which stood on the site of the second buttress facing the bell tower, collapsed in 1753.

In 1904, the cathedral was restored by the architect Čermák according to a plan by the architect Josef Mocker. Between 1906 and 1909, architect Kamil Hilbert participated in the renovation, which also included painting the cathedral. In 1928, the crypt was repaired and cleaned.

The cathedral is one of the leading religious buildings from the heyday of Bohemian Gothic and was part of the city's fortifications.
