In 1632, Veerhuis De Zwaan was built on a river dune, serving both the 'small ferry' to Gelderland and later the 'large steam ferry' between 's-Hertogenbosch and Rotterdam.
Over time, it transformed into an inn with overnight accommodation for both ladies and gentlemen, as illustrated by the swans on the western facade. On the other side are 'De Kleef Aen', an old weigh house with a scale for weighing goods for embarkation, and 'De Zwaan' from 1708, where carriages were stabled and rented out.

The history of De Zwaan is steeped in meaning. Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and his wife stayed here in 1811 during their inspection tour of the fortifications. During the famine of '44/'45, the vault under De Zwaan served as a shelter, etc...

Although the ferry house now serves as a residence, it is still sporadically made available to couples who want to get married via the still present ferry jetty.
