Neckar Bridge Mannheim – Seckenheim/Ilvesheim 🚴‍♂️

The Neckar Bridge connects the Mannheim district of Seckenheim with the municipality of Ilvesheim across the Neckar River. It is part of Baden-Württemberg's State Road 542 (L 542). In the 1920s, work began on channeling the Neckar River. As a result, the water level of the old Neckar branch continually dropped, making the existing ferry service no longer possible. Therefore, a bridge construction competition was announced, and the new crossing was opened to traffic as early as 1927. Like the other Neckar bridges in Mannheim, it was blown up by the Wehrmacht shortly before the end of World War II in 1945. Between 1952 and 1953, the two arches on the Seckenheim side were reinstated. The tied-arch bridge crosses the natural, old Neckar River. The three arched structures, each with a 53.8 m span, are connected at their apex by six crossbeams each. The roadway is suspended at 4.5 m intervals. Outside the arches, cantilevered lanes for pedestrians and cyclists run.

As early as the end of the 19th century, a bridge over the Neckar was planned a few kilometers upstream of the river. This bridge was intended to connect Ladenburg with Neckarhausen in addition to the existing combined railway and pedestrian bridge.
