The Ruhr is a 219.3 km long, right-hand and eastern tributary of the Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) with a catchment area of 4,485 km².

The river flows for approximately 124 km through the territory of the Ruhr Regional Association and gave its name to the Ruhr region, Germany's largest urban area. This name derives from the fact that industrialization began in the late 18th century in the area of the river, where coal is deposited close to the earth's surface.

The river's economic importance today lies in the supply of drinking and industrial water to the Ruhr region, for which the Ruhr Association is responsible, as well as in energy production. In the 19th century, the Ruhr was at times the busiest waterway in Germany. Currently, freight traffic only takes place on the last twelve kilometers of the river, between the Rhine-Ruhr port in Mülheim and the Rhine. The Ruhr Valley is a local recreation area for the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region.

At the historic ford of the Hellweg in Mülheim an der Ruhr, near Broich Castle, the river reaches the Lower Rhine lowlands and changes its course one last time, heading west. Mülheim is the only city in the Ruhr region whose city center is crossed by the river. The Rumbach, the last significant tributary, flows into it from the right, close to Mülheim's city center. Oberhausen is only touched by the river at the southern border of the Alstaden district before the Ruhr reaches Duisburg, where it flows into the Duisburg-Ruhrort ports north of the city center.
