The religious temple of Vila da Marmeleira originated from the Chapel of St. Francis of Assisi, built by the Abbot of Alcobaça, of the Cistercian Order, at the end of the 14th century and beginning of the 15th century, and Marmeleira itself must be related to the leaseholds of the Convent of Almoster.
