This mountain pass just south of the municipal limits of Anchorage, Alaska, in the northeastern part of the Kenai Peninsula marks the highest point on the Seward Highway at approximately milepost 70. Traveling north, the Seward Highway descends into the Anchorage bowl and begins to round the Turnagain Arm. The pass is a popular winter recreation area for skiers, snowshoers, and snowmobilers. On the west side of the road at the pullout, travelers can see evidence of the millennial processes of past ice ages. Low, near-horizontal ridges mark the locations of glacial moraines near the tops of the mountains. These ridges, like bathtub rings, indicate changing ice depths as the former valley glacier thinned, retreated and then re-advanced short distances in response to short-term climatic changes.
