Hambach Castle near Neustadt an der Weinstraße is considered the cradle of German democracy and sits impressively on the castle hill above the town of Hambach. Originally built in the 11th century as a chestnut castle, it rose to fame in 1832 through the Hambach Festival, when over 30,000 people demonstrated for freedom, unity, and civil rights. Today, the castle has been modernly restored and boasts a permanent exhibition on the history of democracy, changing cultural events, and magnificent panoramic views over the Rhine plain and the vineyards of the Palatinate.
