    Scherneck Castle is located about seven kilometers south of Coburg on a rocky slope along the Itz River at an elevation of 325 meters on Hauptstraße 2. County road CO 25, which runs from Untersiemau to Seßlach, runs through the town. The main town, Untersiemau, is about three kilometers east of Scherneck.

      In the village of Schernekke, as Scherneck was called in the Middle Ages, there existed a noble estate in a princely Saxon fiefdom by the mid-14th century at the latest. In the 16th century, it was owned by the Lords of Burghausen from Münnerstadt. In 1580, Philipp von Lichtenstein zu Wiesen acquired the property. In 1621, it passed to Wilhelm von Streitberg zu Ahorn, and in 1645, finally to Johann Jacob Drach, Chancellor of Coburg. In 1659, the Scherneck estate was sold to Johann Christian Ameling, the lord of the manor and estate in Meeder. His children sold the manor and Ziegelsdorf Castle to Baron Hans Heymerian Eusebius von Völlerndorff und Waradein, who had immigrated from Austria, in 1682. The Baron died four years later. In 1700, his widow sold Scherneck Castle and estate to Georg Christoph von Merklin, who lived in Scheuerfeld. [

        The castle, as it has appeared since the last quarter of the 18th century, is a simple sandstone block building with three floors and a mansard roof. The predecessor building, 100 to 200 years older, was declared in 1710 to be in a state of disrepair, meaning its structure could not be saved. The new building was designed by the Coburg landscape director, Moritz Carl Freiherr von Imhoff, after he had purchased the dilapidated manor house in 1773. The only adornment of the building, which is divided into five window axes on the street side, is the central entrance portal with a round arch and a curved cornice above. Four dormers protrude from the roof at the front and rear, the two middle ones with high gable roofs, the two outer ones with lower, rounded roofs. Source: Wikipedia
