The success story of the Kandlerhof in Santa Maddalena/Bolzano began in 1278, when the property was first documented. In 1793, the Spornberger family took over the estate, which has remained in the family ever since. In the late 1960s, when grape buyers drove down prices, the Spornberger family decided to produce their own wine. Gregor Spornberger, a pioneer in South Tyrolean viticulture, initiated the transition from pure grape cultivation to wine production and increasingly used machinery in viticulture. His son Martin took over the Kandlerhof.
