The City God Temple was built 1557 during the Ming Dynasty. During the 1500s Chuansha was frequently bothered by Japanese invaders and built a city wall. During that time the City God Temple was also errected.
Over the centuries the temple was repeatedly repaired and rebuilt, so in 1796 and 1899. As all (or most) religious venue the temple was closed during the Cultural Revolution. Only in 2014 the government of Shanghai and Chuansha raised the funds to rebuild the temple once more.
