Very close to the seaside resort of Senggigi, just one kilometer south along the beach, lies the Hindu Batu Bolong Temple. Its name is derived from Bolong for hole and Batu for stone, because the small temple is located on a cliff directly on the coast and the jet-black rock has several large holes in it, hence the Bolong. It is a little reminiscent of the Pura Tanah Lot in Bali, especially when the rock braces itself against the surf at high tide. And in fact there is also a Batu Bolong Temple on the site of the Balinese brother. This one also stands on the shore on a rock with a hole in it. The Pura Batu Bolong on Lombok is, however, a little smaller than its Balinese counterpart.
