Oldenburg Lock

The lock, built between 1922 and 1928, is 105 metres long and overcomes a height difference of up to 5.40 metres at low tide. It is part of the coastal canal that connects the Hunte with the West German canal network. If the Oldenburg lock is closed, shipping has to take a detour of around 350 kilometres via the Middle Weser, the Mittelland Canal and the Dortmund-Ems Canal. The lock is used by around 5,000 inland vessels per year. In the summer months, numerous leisure boats also use it. Next to the lock there is a barrage in the Hunte, which was built when the coastal canal was built to regulate the water levels of the various bodies of water. In 1927, it was supplemented by a hydroelectric power station that takes advantage of the height difference of a good 5 metres.
