Originally built of wood and straw in 1835 as a residence for the Minister of War. Rebuilt in durable material in 1886. After WW1 the pavilion was converted into an officers' mess. In 1950 it was restored.

Here was the wooden royal palace, built in 1835. It was used as a residence for the king during visits and inspections of the major exercises until 1877. It was demolished in 1913. A new planned palace was never built due to the outbreak of WW1.

A wooden pavilion was built for the Minister of War as early as 1835, which was replaced by a brick building in 1886. Characteristic is the central entrance with a projecting neoclassical pediment, supported by four Doric columns. Later, this pavilion served for many years as a garrison club for officers and today it is a military party hall under the name Villa Astrid. The original two sets of four windows were probably replaced by two sets of two windows in the 1970s and major changes were also made to the interior at that time. However, the building is still recognisable as such. Above the entrance, on the side of the Zegeplein, there is an image of a Brabant lion.

The Royal Palace was also located at this location. The wooden palace was built from 14 to 22 July 1835. Captain Lery was both the architect and the builder. It was given a central place on the eastern side of the Royal Park. It consisted of only one floor. A portico, a kind of rotunda supported by oak trunks, gives access along the four sides. On either side of this portico, one sees two wall wings in woven straw on which the letter "L" can be read. Doors and windows are bordered with oak trunks. The north and south porticos are separated from the banqueting hall by two small reception rooms. One of these is the so-called "Salon der Generals". Furthermore, one finds the apartments for the royal family and their entourage. The palace was flanked by two smaller pavilions, which housed the artillerymen who operated the alarm gun (at 5am or 6am in winter, at 12pm and 9pm) between 1837 and 1913. King Leopold I stayed here regularly, his son Leopold II for the last time in 1875. King Albert I wanted to use it again, but the pavilion had become very dilapidated and was demolished in 1912. Plans to build a new one in the “Vals Park” were never carried out because of the war.
