The Oltmannsberg (O-Berg for short) near Ostrittrum, which is designated as a natural monument, is an inland dune that was created by wind drifts after the Ice Age.
After climbing the few meters in altitude, you suddenly find yourself in a completely different landscape. The nutrient-poor sandy soil has given rise to heather and dry sandy grassland. To preserve this beautiful natural monument, the area is regularly maintained and sheep are grazed there.
The rest area at the foot of the Düne is currently besieged by giant forest ants, which are one of the most protected animal species in Germany.
