The castle is located on the edge of the town of Guttenberg in the Kulmbach district, about 3 km as the crow flies east of Stadtsteinach, or 10 km from Kulmbach.
It is now the ancestral home of the zu Guttenberg family.
The name von und zu Guttenberg became known to a wider public when Karl Theodor was a minister in Merkel's cabinet from 2009 to 2011.
In musical circles, his father Enoch Freiherr ... is valued as an important conductor (died 2018).
The family comes from a very wealthy Franconian noble family whose ancestors can be traced back to the 12th century.
The castle complex was repeatedly rebuilt after being destroyed in 1523 and further sieges. It was last renovated in 1908 after a fire.
