A lilac-blue and purple worth seeing: Many "rose trees" (Greek rhododendrons) with their enchanting floral decoration cover the avenue in color every year at the end of May/beginning of June for several hundred meters. The princely house of that time chose plants from the heather family as the edging for the main driveway for the summer residence on Lake Steinhude.

In terms of design, the rhododendron avenue is a relatively young part of the castle and garden ensemble at Hagenburg Castle: in 1913, the last reigning prince, Adolf II of Schaumburg-Lippe, had 1000 rhododendrons from Westerstede planted over a length of around 400 metres. He also had the circular goldfish pond near the castle bordered with rhododendrons.

While Bathildis zu Schaumburg-Lippe, grandmother of the current head of the family Alexander zu Schaumburg-Lippe, was still alive, it could happen that walkers on the avenue were approached by her.
