Situated on a hill just above the village of the same name, with a spectacular view of the green Vipava Valley, Leutemberg Castle has remained a silent witness to many significant moments in Slovenian history for centuries.
The first construction dates back to the 12th century, underwent numerous modifications and in the second half of the 17th century reached its current form. Although similar to many castles dating back to the Middle Ages, the building looks more like a large country house than a fortress.
The ownership of the manor changed hands between 12 families. The last, the Bavarian Mayer family, purchased it around 1800 and gave impetus to significant cultural and economic growth. The decline began with the Second World War and the estate was abandoned by the Mayers following the nationalization and expropriation of private property in 1945 by the new Yugoslav government. The palace was the seat of an agricultural school from 1946 to 1961. Abandoned in 1987, it was left to fall into ruin.
