The statue 'De Griendwerker' is by Niek van Leest (1930-2012).

What is a Griendwerker?
Griendwerkers cut the willow branches of various types of willow in marshy areas. The branches and twigs were used for wickerwork, including chair seats, for the manufacture of wooden barrels as staves, as pole wood for farmers and later also for zinc work in hydraulic engineering.

Replicas are awarded as a distinction to people who have made a valuable contribution to the De Biesbosch National Park.
The griendwerkers lived all week in poor shelters such as huts made of reed and wood, arks, and worked long, hard days for a small wage. The men were also called 'Griend-uil'; they were inconspicuous, but always present in the griends.
