Thongson Bay is a kind of well-kept secret among visitors - the kind of beach where you can stay almost alone if you arrive early enough.
Thongson Bay is located on the Plai Laem peninsula, near the northernmost point of Koh Samui. In the neighborhood there is Samrong Bay, slightly higher up, which is separated from Thongson only by a high hill with a rocky base. Thongson Bay beach is a small beach, only about half a kilometer long.
The bay is covered with white-beige but fine sand and small pebbles as well as shell dust. It is not too wide, especially at high tide. At both ends the shore and bottom are rocky. In the middle of the beach you should be careful when entering the water: there are some areas covered with sharp corals. But there is also a wide zone where you can comfortably enter the waves in the soft sand.
The water in Thongson is shallow and sometimes a little murky, which is due to the current conditions. Walking in water up to your knees on this beach is not so exciting and you can't really observe the playful fish that can be found here like everywhere else on Koh Samui because of the murky water. But on days with little wind and good weather, the bay is a quiet dream.
The only beach activities on Thongson Beach are kayaks and peace and quiet, as very few people stray here. Since the water slopes quite gently, you can also splash around here with children. To find entertainment, sights, souvenirs and a variety of cuisine (there is only one small restaurant on Thongson) you have to look for another beach.
It is not so easy to find a public access to Thongson Bay. The best thing to do is to follow the signs that lead to the Thongsonbay bungalows. The road to the beach is winding and leads around the walls of a spa hotel Melati, then sand replaces asphalt and the path leads through a grove of coconut palms.
Although nude bathing is actually prohibited in Thailand, there is an exception here. About 100m as the crow flies to the east, there is a tiny little bay that can only be reached by climbing over the rocks, which is called Naturism Beach.
