History of the town of Rapperswil
This article deals with the history of the town of Rapperswil up to January 1, 2007, when the municipality merged with Jona (SG) under the new name of Rapperswil-Jona.
The history of settlement in the immediate vicinity of Rapperswil, a district of the Swiss municipality of Rapperswil-Jona in the canton of St. Gallen, goes back at least 5000 years. The settlement site in the vicinity of the castle hill (Lindenhof) can be historically traced back to the late 10th century - the city was first mentioned in 1229.

Rapperswil, the Riviera on the upper part of Lake Zurich, awaits visitors with southern charm. The small alleys in the medieval old town invite you to go shopping.

Rapperswil Castle is enthroned on the Castle Hill. From here you have a captivating view over the city and the lake. Rapperswil deserves the name Rose City because of the more than 20,000 roses that bloom from May to October in the rose gardens at the Capuchin Monastery and on the "Schanz". The latter is a blind rose garden with special scented roses. Their names are written in Braille on notice boards.

Rapperswil is an interesting town with a large lake access, this amounts to Bollingen. The city is always something to discover with its lanes. The shops in the old town are always open also on Sunday. In sunny weather, the harbor is a popular place to go for a walk.
