Kesternich used to belong to the Simmerath parish and did not have its own church. At the beginning of the 18th century, the inhabitants of the village tried to get a building permit for their own church. In order to build the church and create a cemetery, Martin Stollenwerk donated a piece of land. The Vicariate General of the Archdiocese of Cologne, to which Kesternich belonged at that time, gave the approval, but the collator of the Simmerath parish, the Aachen collegiate chapter, did not agree. Nevertheless, the Kesternicher built their own church from 1718 to 1719. However, this was not assigned until 1721, after the sovereign, the vicariate general and the collegiate chapter had agreed. However, Kersternich initially remained as a branch at Simmerath, but received his own vicar. Kersternich finally became an independent parish in 1804 in the course of parish registrations during the French era.

the Roman Castriniacum changed since the 2nd century AD. first to Kasternich and finally to today's Kesternich - in 2015 there were 1433 inhabitants - the first church was built in 1718 - this larger then in the years 1899 to 1901 - with the highest church tower in the Monschau region (54m) - massively destroyed in the 2nd world war, Reconstruction in the years 1947-1952, still today pilgrimages take place in honor of the 14 helpers; Pictures of the interior see my hiking highlight ⛪👍

behind the church at the sacristy you will find a push button to the water tap (in winter parked) ... the bus stop offers a spacious shelter 🚵👍
