While I'm usually scathing about cycling infrastructure in Auckland, I have to say, when they do build it - they often do it right. Along with the Western Pathway, this route is one of the best in the region if you want to move quickly and safely, plus it's a pretty decent gateway to Karaka, Kingseat, etc. There's Countdown at the start of the northern end if you need some carbs, and shops at the southern end. It sheds water well in the crappy weather too and doesn't get muddy etc. I use this to get down from Botany into Franklin, and after the streets of Manurewa and Takanini it's a welcome relief. Personally, I'd say park at the supermarket carpark and then ride down from there.
