A Loreto Chapel (also Loretto Chapel, Loreto Church, Maria Loreto) is a sacred building dedicated to the patronage of Our Lady of Loreto. It is usually an architectural replica of the Santa Casa ("Holy House") within the Basilica of the Holy House in Loreto in the Italian pilgrimage site of Loreto near Ancona. According to legendary tradition, in the 13th century angels transferred the house of the Holy Family from Nazareth to Loreto in what is now the Marche region.
The Loretto Chapel is located at the collegiate church and can be reached via a staircase from the north choir. The building is essentially Gothic and was probably originally used as a charnel house. The windowless, vaulted room now serves as a Protestant prayer room. The catacombs with the graves of the Jesuit priests are located beneath the chapel.
