Some History: Svinö actually got its name simply because pigs were allowed to graze on the island (pig = svin). In the writings the village is mentioned in the 15th century, but the village was probably already in the 12th-13th century. Century inhabited, like other villages in Lumparland.
In the northwest, Svinö borders Krogstad Bay. There was once a strait from which you could go directly to Västerfjärdet. In the 15th century there was sometimes a bridge over the strait.
Old documents show that there was also a bridge over the strait in the 17th century, because Lemland wanted to build a new chapel in Lumparland in Svinöhö, so that the people in Lemland, especially the people living there, would have a shorter route to the church in the villages of Granboda, Haddnäs and Vessingsboda.
In Svinö, there was no new church, and it was assumed that this was due to the protests of the population of Lumparland, as they themselves would have had a longer journey to church.
