    Stift Dürnstein is a former monastery in Dürnstein in the Wachau region of Lower Austria. Today the buildings and the large property belong to the Augustinian Canons' Monastery in Herzogenburg, which also oversees the parish of Dürnstein. The tower of the collegiate church with its blue and white coloring is considered the symbol of the Wachau. The collegiate church, which has also been a parish church since 1745, is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary into Heaven (patrocin festival on August 15).

      History

      During the 11th century, the Kuenringers came to Austria from the Bavarian-Saxon region and received large areas around Eggenburg and Gobelsburg as imperial fiefs.

      In the service of the Austrian Babenberg prince, they acquired a large part of the Waldviertel. The Tegernsee monastery in Bavaria appointed them as bailiffs over the monastery's properties in the Wachau.

      Asso von Kuenring acquired the area around today's Dürnstein, and his grandson Hadmar I fortified the rock above the Danube for the first time.

      In 1192/93, the English King Richard I the Lionheart was imprisoned in the Kuenringer castle on behalf of the Babenberg Leopold V. A share of Richard's ransom, which went to the Kuenringers, enabled the castle and town of Dürnstein to expand and flourish in the 13th and 14th centuries.

          Very worth seeing, definitely plan and visit the beautiful town. Due to the scenic and architectural beauty of the Wachau, Dürnstein has become one of the most famous tourist destinations in Austria. The blue tower of the collegiate church is also considered a landmark in the Wachau. Worth the detour!
