Pedro Coloma ended up in the Habsburg Netherlands in 1577 to fight in the Eighty Years' War. In 1580, he was appointed contador mayor (supreme treasurer) of the Army of Flanders by Alexander Farnese. His appointment was confirmed by letters of patent from Madrid in 1584.
He bought the lordship of Bornem in 1586, which became a barony in 1592. Jean-François Coloma, his grandson and fourth baron of Bornem, became its first count in 1658.
Pedro Coloma had an estate built on the site of the later castle of Bornem. He is also the builder of the Sas van Bornem (1589-1592) that made shipping possible between the Scheldt and the Oude Scheldt and thus contributed to the economic development of Bornem. This sas is the oldest preserved mechanical lock in Belgium. In 1603 Pedro Coloma founded the Monastery of the Holy Cross there to preserve the relics of the Holy Cross that he possessed. From 1658 onwards the monastery would accommodate English Dominicans fleeing religious persecution and in 1836 it became the Saint Bernard Abbey of Bornem.

The artist of this statue of "Don Pedro Coloma", Henri Lannoye (1946-2006) came from Aardenburg in the Netherlands, but lived here in Bornem from the age of 23 until his death.
He also made the statue "Horse Power", the original of which is on the Wellington racecourse in Ostend, but a copy of which can be found in the Luipegemstraat, less than a kilometre from here. The similarity in style between the two statues is great.
In 1988 he founded the non-profit organisation Monumental and started the development of the sculpture park behind his studio at Luipegem 77 here in Bornem.
