The castle complex was probably built in the 12th century and demolished towards the end of the 18th century due to disrepair and used as a quarry.
Count Adolf (1198-1249) resided here and founded the city of Hamm in 1226.
Today's complex consists of the castle hill, the fore bailey and the Gruppenring.
