A hiking paradise in the Netherlands. Fort Pannerden is located in the middle of a beautiful river landscape. Between the Waal and the Pannerdensch Kanaal. Just a stone's throw from Münsterland.

Around Fort Pannerden, free-roaming Galloway cattle and Konik horses keep nature at bay. Cycle paths lead over small dikes with a view of the Waal and the Pannerdensch Kanaal. You can cycle to Fort Pannerden via a small asphalt road. There is a charging station next to the terrace to charge your e-bike. Visitors are not allowed to drive to the fort! If you don't want to walk that far (1 km), you can use the free shuttle service. An electric rickshaw runs regularly from the car park to Fort Pannerden and back again.

Fort Pannerden - between Waal and Pannerdensch Kanaal

Fort Pannerden is one of the largest forts in the Netherlands. Most of it is under a mound of earth. Five stories deep! From above you can see a green hill, the polygonal shape and dry trenches. Without the trenches, the complex is 75 x 70 m in size. Smaller bunkers are spread around the fort. Fort Pannerden is a barrier fort. An independent fortification that could be defended on all sides and served against invading troops. During the First World War, around 300 soldiers were stationed here. Today the fort is open to visitors. The building houses a museum, a small shop and a museum café with an outdoor terrace.
