In the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district, a newly built hydroelectric power plant has now officially been put into operation at the Mulde reservoir. According to the state of Saxony-Anhalt, the plant at the outlet structure of the dam will generate around 13.6 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per year in the future and can therefore cover the energy needs of around 4,000 households in the region. The Mulde reservoir is a former open-cast mining pit that was flooded in the mid-1970s when the Mulde was relocated. With an area of around 6.3 square kilometers and around 135 million cubic meters of reservoir water, it is the third largest body of water in the country. Around 25 million euros were invested in the construction of the hydroelectric power plant; Construction began in October 2016.

The hydroelectric power plant at the Mulde reservoir is operated by Talsperren-Wasserkraft Sachsen-Anhalt (TSW), a subsidiary of the Saxony-Anhalt Dam Company. In total, TSW operates five hydroelectric power plants in the state, which generate almost 19 million kWh of electricity annually.
