The late Baroque church was built in Benitsa in 1704. There is a legend associated with its construction: in 1701, Mikhail Kotsell (the owner of these lands and the Vitebsk commandant) was traveling with his family in a carriage from Benitsa to Ashmyany. When the carriage was carrying only the Kotsells' little daughter, the horses suddenly jerked forward and carried the carriage away. The girl could have died, and all Mikhail Kotsell managed to do was fall to his knees in prayer to the Mother of God. According to the legend, the horses stopped immediately, and the girl was saved. Mikhail Kotsell swore that he would build a church on this site, and he kept his oath. After the construction, the church was given to the Bernardines, and a monastery was built nearby.
