Steinertsee is a residual open-cast mining lake. Lignite was mined here both open-cast and underground from 1955 to 1967. Afterwards, the pit was used as a garbage dump for several years. In 1971, the recultivation of the now-flooded pit and the adjacent areas began. A leisure, recreation, and sports area, the Steinertsee Park, was created.
