The Pembe Za Ndovu (Elephant Tusks) drive thru gate was first constructed in around the 1950's when the Royal family of England came to visit Kenya/Mombasa. The residents of Mombasa put up a structure in form of tusks to beautify the road where the Queen would pass as she went to the yatching club. The idea was to pull down the structures after Queen Elizabeth exited the country but the structures become so popular that the residents and tourist thronged the place to take pictures and most tour companies and business people started associating themselves with the tusks, that the Mombasa municipality rebuilt them in a material that will last long.
They are made of aluminum and they have been standing at Moi Avenue since 1994 forming an M-shape symbol that is the first letter of Mombasa
