Unique construction in the world.
It began to be built in 1413 by order of Fernando de Antequera, king of the crown of Aragon, to defend the area from possible Saracen attacks or Berber pirates, an event not exactly isolated and which had converted the coasts of Oropesa del Mar, according to the words textual statements of the King himself, in costs that “In place of men. They are inhabited by panthers; and instead of domestic birds vultures and crows flit about.” Curiously, it was built with donations in brushes from the churches placed for this purpose and with private donations from the people of the crown of Aragon, mainly from Valencia.
Of all the extensions and improvements that were made to it, perhaps the most important was the one carried out by Juan de Cervellón in 1534, leaving its walls 4 meters wide. In 1564 the tower was purchased by Philip II for 10,000 ducats, so it was renamed the King's Tower.
If you look at this construction that is practically unique in the world, you can understand the feeling of security that it conveyed to the inhabitants of Oropesa de Mar and that certainly contributed to the repopulation and flourishing of the town. (MODIFY)
Its mere presence deterred many pirate attacks, so frequent at the time, and today offers you the possibility of admiring a military construction unparalleled in the rest of the world.
