The church in Casaglia was dedicated to "San PIETRO". Simon, nicknamed Peter (Rock), was a fisherman on Lake Genesareth when he - together with his brother Andrew - was called by Jesus Christ to be a "fisher of men".
According to Catholic understanding, he is the highest apostle, and the two thousand year long line of popes - currently Francis - are his successors. In statues and paintings, Peter is almost always depicted with two keys in his hand; this attribute refers to the Bible verse in Matthew: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." (Chapter 16, Verse 19).
San Pietro is - together with San Paolo - also known as the "prince of the apostles"; their common feast day in the calendar of saints is June 29th.

After passing the Passo della Colla, descending on the Lamone slope, after a few kilometers you reach the town of Casaglia (municipality of Borgo San Lorenzo) which is located just off the main road.
The Church of San Pietro in Vinculis, in the center of the town, was built between 1905 and 1911 in modern Gothic style a few meters from the ancient Church of Pietra Santa in Casaglia built on the ruins of a Rocca degli Ubaldini. On the main entrance door, a terracotta commemorates the miracle of St. Peter's escape from the Roman prisons through the intervention of an angel of the Lord who severed his chains (vincula).
