Since it was not possible to make burials in swampy, damp soil in the valleys in the past, people from the area decided to build a cemetery and a small chapel high up on this mountain. The original church burned down completely after a lightning strike in 1687 and was replaced in 1702 by the church that still exists today.

Michaelskirche is a nice highlight on a hike that you should definitely see.

"The St. Michaelskirche or mountain church, as it is also called, is likely to be the extension of a castle chapel from the 11th or 12th century. The location was probably chosen because the burial in the valley and thus the creation of a cemetery because of the abundance of water swamp-like area was not possible.
The legend tells that the Kaubenheimers had prepared the timber for a church in the valley three times, but that it was on the mountain the following morning, so that it was finally accepted as a divine symbol for the location of the church. "
