Around the Rur near Hückelhoven - industrial culture and crafts in transition

On this tour you will experience the past and yet lively era of coal mining and discover numerous scenic and cultural gems.

The Rur shapes Hückelhoven. The river flows through the city from southeast to northwest. Surrounded by meadows and fields, rows of trees and strips of woodland, the Rur forms a green-blue ribbon in the plain. Once feared because of its frequent floods, the Rur has now been tamed and is an invaluable recreational and adventure for the city.

Churches, castles and manor houses from the Middle Ages can be found in almost every one of the 11 towns. But the history goes back further. Around 2000 years ago, legionaries, merchants and craftsmen traveled along Roman roads through what is now Hilfarth. They probably brought the art of basket making, which is still cultivated today, to the region back then. Agriculture and crafts formed the structure in the last century.

The place name Hückelhoven with its ending in -hoven suggests that the town was founded in the Carolingian to late Carolingian period (8th/9th century). However, modest grave finds from the northern edge of the town from the 6th century indicate that settlement began in the early Middle Ages.
