    The summit cross is a little way away from the summit, because the beautiful lookout tower is located there. However, it is right on the path and cannot be overlooked. The path is easy to walk. No special skills or equipment are required. The summit cross and the lookout tower are already in Hungary.

        24.05.2014 - The summit cross made of aluminum has only been available since May 2012. It fits well on the rocks, even if it is not the highest point.

          Beautiful observation tower at the top of Geschriebenstein. All around there are some seating for a rest. Free entry. If the weather is nice there is certainly something going on here. Here are mountain bike trails and hiking trails from all sides. The way I came was very easy to walk on, no special skills required.

                The interesting thing about this tower is that it is exactly on the border. 2/3 are on the Hungarian side, 1/3 on the Burgenland side. The entrance is in Burgenland. That was very interesting at the time of the Iron Curtain. The border at the tower was constantly guarded by Hungarian border guards, you could not step on Hungarian soil. Only when you entered the tower could you step on Hungarian soil under the eyes of the border soldiers.

                  Instead of a wooden tower ("Árpád Tower") that the municipality of Güns had built on the Geschrittenstein in 1891, the municipality of Rechnitz built the stone observation tower that is still preserved today, right on the Austrian-Hungarian border - the border runs right through the observation tower.

                          "Geschriebenstein" (in Hungarian: Írott-kő) is the top of the mountain range "Günser Gebirge" (Kőszegi-hegység), it is located on the border of Austria and Hungary. With its height of 882 meters above sea level, it is also the highest point in Burgenland (Austria) and Transdanubia (Hungary).
                          From its viewpoint (in German: Aussichtsturm Geschriebenstein, in Hungarian: Írottkő-kilátó) we have a spectacular view towards both countries.

                            The writing stone is finally reached after a total of 10 km. At 884m, it is the highest peak in Burgenland. There is also a lookout point where you have a wonderful view and can be admired in perfect weather on the Schneeberg or, for example, the Stickelberg.

                                        Great view! And right next to it a cozy table and bench combination for a break. By the way, it is especially nice in autumn or on November and December mornings. When the fog runs through the forest and the sun shines through ... a very special mystical atmosphere ... and the land below the summit is shrouded in fog and only individual mountains protrude like islands ... wonderful.                                           The Gewrittenstein is the highest mountain in Burgenland and the view from the lookout point at the summit is correspondingly great. You can get here from the saddle with the parking lot on a path suitable for prams. Walking time approx. 30 minutes.

                                              The summit is easy to reach from the pass, and the view is beautiful. The climb is worth it. There's also a restroom at the summit, open during the day. It's a very clean and large restroom with a changing table. If the door can't be opened during opening hours, the wastewater tank is full. However, this isn't indicated. We only found out because a local council employee was on site. I was able to use the restroom, but my wife's door wouldn't open :-) Just for your information.
