History: The economic and cultural center is located on a hill above the Želetavka River. For strategic reasons and for better defense, it was founded in 1227 on a rock above the river at the behest of King Otakar I. However, the construction of the fortifications was not completed until the 14th century.
On February 4, 1327, the town received further privileges from King John and became a Free Royal Town. In the 19th century, Jemnice was hit by the plague twice and the town center was badly damaged during the fire of 1832.
In Jamnitz there used to be a monastery of the Franciscan Observants, in whose former church important wall paintings were discovered.
