From Maxstrasse, the Wandse was canalized between 1854 and 1900 and is therefore called the Eilbek Canal.
From 2009, ten berths for houseboats were set up on the north bank of the Eilbek Canal as part of the pilot project "Living on the water". Five berths are located in the section between Wagnerstrasse and Richardstrasse (Barmbek-Süd) and five more in the section between Finkenau and Lerchenfeld (Uhlenhorst).
The houseboats are moored to Dalben and are connected to the sewage system, power supply and garbage disposal on the bank. The houseboats are standardized in the base area and have a width of 6 meters, so as not to impede shipping, 10 meters long. So that they can still pass under the bridges, they have a maximum height of 3.25 meters above the water level. The upper floor may only occupy half of the basement in order to give pedestrians a view of the Eilbek Canal.
The living space is 130 to 160 square meters. Lease is paid for the berth. The boats are used as offices or as apartments.
The bicycle road in Uferstrasse and Lortzingstrasse has been running parallel to the Eilbek Canal since 2012 as part of Veloroute 6, which leads from the city via Dulsberg to Farmsen.
