The New Herrenchiemsee Palace is located on Herrenchiemsee, the largest island in Lake Chiemsee in southern Bavaria. After the island's former name, it is also occasionally referred to as the New Herrenwörth Palace. The building was built from 1878 under the so-called fairytale king Ludwig II, based on the model of the Palace of Versailles near Paris. The designs for the historicist building were mainly by Georg von Dollmann, and the Austrian Julius Hofmann was responsible for the execution. Herrenchiemsee Palace was Ludwig II's last major construction project; he only lived there for a few days. The work ended with the king's death in June 1886, and the building remained largely unfinished.

The most magnificent castle is well worth seeing if you are ever staying at Chiemsee. You can take a boat to Herreninsel. We set off from Prien. A little tip: you should go there in the morning until midday, because from the afternoon onwards the boats are extremely crowded.
