The church building of today's St. Salvatoris Church, first documented in 1230, fell victim to the floods of the Elbe. However, the stones and inventory of the previous church were saved from the floods.

In the spring of 1685, today's half-timbered church was rebuilt with financial support from Hamburg, Lübeck, Bergedorf and the Vier- and Marschlanden from the old materials of the previous church above the Elbe. Due to the financial situation of the town of Geesthacht, the then favorable half-timbered style was chosen for the new construction of the church.

The church was consecrated in November 1685 and named "Salvatoris" (Church of the Redeemer).
The wooden bell tower was built between 1686 and 1691. It was not until 1841 that St. Salvatoris Church received its galleries in order to provide sufficient space for the growing population of the town. Not far from the banks of the Elbe River, this romantic half-timbered church now exudes a rural idyll between the city and the Elbe River. It is a popular tourist destination.

St. Salvatoris Church is located in the oldest part of Geesthacht. Since the two previous churches were destroyed by floods on the Elbe, this church was built on the highest possible site on the Elbe riverbank. Construction began in the spring of 1685, about a year after the destruction of the previous church. At that time, Geesthacht was a relatively poor village with approximately 300 inhabitants. The new building was only possible with financial support from Hamburg, Lübeck, Bergedorf, and the Vierlanden and Marschlanden districts. Stones, the altar, pulpit, bells, clock, and other items from the previous church were reused, and the residents of Geesthacht helped with the new construction. The decision to build a half-timbered structure was also made for financial reasons: it was the most cost-effective solution.
On November 13, 1685, the church was consecrated and named "Salvatoris Church," or Redeemer Church. The wooden bell tower, however, was not completed until 1691. The church essentially acquired its current form in the mid-19th century. Galleries were added to provide sufficient space for the growing population. The existing pulpit, an epitaph, and the door of the former confessional (all from the previous church) became the pulpit altar, as it still stands in the church today. The figures in it represent the priest Aaron and the martyred Christ. In 2000, the altar was restored with the aim of restoring its original colors. In the center of the nave hangs the chandelier donated in 1786, at the top of which hangs a small boat, indicating the profession of the donors. Among the oldest objects are a small statue of a saint and the chest, securely secured with two locks, in which the parish's assets were once kept.
In the altar area, three gravestones are embedded in the walls. They were originally located in the floor and commemorate pastors buried in the church. The baptismal font was designed in the 1970s around an old wooden post found in the Elbe River. A matching lectern was added in 2002. The first organ was installed in 1843 and replaced by new ones in 1911 and 1969, respectively.
Three bells hang in the tower. The largest and oldest dates back to the 14th century and is the oldest part of the church. The two smaller bells were created in 1959.
The parish hall and rectory adjacent to the church were completed in 1917.
