The Diemel Dam (DiT), which consists of a reservoir, dam wall, hydroelectric power station and balancing basin, is owned by the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration; the Weser Waterways and Shipping Office (formerly the Hann. Münden Waterways and Shipping Office) is responsible for operating the dam. Along with the Edersee, the Diemelsee is one of the water-regulating dams in the Weser catchment area.

The Diemelsee, also called Diemelstausee or (pars pro toto) Diemeltalsperre, is a reservoir with a water surface of 1.65 km² and around 19.9 million m³ of storage space on the Diemel. It is located in the area of the municipality of Diemelsee in the Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg and in the urban area of Marsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany).
