Center already active in Roman times ...
Emperor Otto in 947 mentions it as "Castello Sancti Georgii": in less than peaceful times the inhabitants had chosen a warrior saint as their protector.
The place, already located in a strategic position for trade, was fortified in the fourteenth century with impressive works of which well-preserved traces remain: in 1388 the entire castle was fortified. In 1391 the Torresotto was built in the central square. Palazzo Capuana, built in 1403 near the Ferrara gate and renovated in 1913, still retains its ancient features, and today remains the only remaining evidence of the ancient castle.
In the Middle Ages the parish church was a parish church on which 15 churches depended. Dedicated to San Giorgio, it was renovated and modified in the 19th century, while the bell tower dates back to the previous century.
