The Franciscan monastery of St. Johannis in Kyritz was built in the second half of the 13th century. At the end of the Middle Ages, the monastery gained supra-regional importance within the convent. The monastery's supporters included margravial officials, but also wealthy citizens - and not only from Kyritz. After the monastery was dissolved in 1541, a country nobleman received the monastery grounds as a fief and transferred part of the complex to the city as a poorhouse. After these buildings fell into disrepair, they were demolished at the beginning of the 18th century. The monastery church served as a city church in the 17th century and then as a garrison church, and was demolished at the end of the 18th century except for the remaining part of the northern longitudinal wall. Only the cloister wing, which was used as a residential building and converted into a Baroque style, remained. In 2013/14, the remaining parts of the north wall, the nave with the gatehouse, the city and monastery walls and the garden pavilion were renovated.
